Why does SEQ need you?

Tens of thousands of South East Queensland home owners live under the constant threat of severe flooding and the heartbreaking disruption caused by these natural disasters.

Our cherished waterways, landscapes and native wildlife that make life in SEQ so special are also under the same threat.

Then, while recovery efforts were still ongoing, further heavy rain and damaging weather in May left more than 550 roads across the state cut by flooding and multiple people stranded, requiring evacuation once again. A stark reminder that SEQ is not prepared to handle the impacts of climate change.

To create disaster resilient regions, we must have proactive investment in on-ground projects that reduce flood risk, rather than governments simply pouring millions into clean up and recovery after the event.

Channelling investment into resilience is not just an economically sound approach, it will also have untold positive social, environmental and cultural benefits for SEQ.

Resilience solutions are 3-5 times more cost effective than reactive disaster response
More than 17,000 Brisbane homes & businesses were damaged in 2022, with 1,800 of these considered severely damaged
Up to 50,000 homes in Brisbane alone are at risk of severe flooding

“We know that active and targeted investment in flood preparedness could greatly increase resilience and reduce the impact of future extreme events – and let’s be candid – more extreme events are on the cards as a result of climate change.”

Julie McLellan, CEO of Healthy Land & Water

80% of Moreton Bay's seagrass beds were impacted after the 2011 floods
~5 million tonnes of sediment entered Moreton Bay during the 2022 rain event
More than 22,000 tonnes of waste have been collected after the 2022 floods

What we’re doing

It is time for everyone in SEQ to pull together and make our region more resilient to the impact of natural disasters, such as floods, bushfires, and climate change has on our environment and lifestyle.

Healthy, vegetated landscapes also decrease the volume of sediments being swept out lost to Moreton Bay and the ocean where they cause further damage to precious marine life.

We are convening a region-wide roundtable event bringing together community leaders and influencers to help map out strategies and demand proactive change for SEQ.

“Not only did we lose our home, we also lost my family day care business.”

Jess Ly, Indooroopilly

“We were told in 2011 it was going to be a once in 100 year event, and now it’s happened twice in 10 years. So you sort of ask yourself about all those promises the pollies make, what happened to them?”
